What is a share certificate?
A share certificate is a savings product that yields higher returns on your money than a regular savings account. Members deposit a fixed amount of money for a set term and in exchange get a higher interest rate on the money put in. The money is then held until the end of the term. If members withdraw their money before the end of the term some fees and penalties may apply.
How is a share certificate different from a CD?
Both products work the same way. Share certificates are issued by credit unions and are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Whereas a CD (certificate of deposit) are issued by banks and are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
Is my money secure in a share certificate?
Yes – N.E.W. Credit Union is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Just like FDIC, NCUA is a government agency that insures deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per credit union, per account type. So, no matter what happens, your money is protected up to the insured limit.
